The Appleby Story Exhibition opens to a great turnout

ACE has taken on a short term lease of shop premises at 2 Bridge Street to host ‘The Appleby Story’ exhibition.  The exhibition space opened on Friday, 19th July and recorded an incredible 225 visitors during its first weekend. The exhibition tells the story of Appleby through images, exhibits and stories and will be open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm and on Sundays from 11am to 1pm.  Entry is free and the exhibition will be manned by volunteers from the community.

The exhibition has been organised by ACE with the loan of images, displays and artefacts from the Appleby-in-Westmorland Society, Appleby Archaeology Group and Appleby Records Society.

The exhibition was really well received from both local residents and visitors.

Some comments from the visitors book …

“Well done! This will be a huge benefit to the town and looking forward to contributing to the displays.”

Fantastic exhibition, well displayed in a modern style. Well done to everyone – a great addition to Appleby!”

The images and exhibits will change over the course of the coming months and the organisers would like to hear from anyone who may have photographs, stories or articles they think would contribute to the exhibition. They would also like to hear from anyone who has an interest in local history and would be interested in helping out in the exhibition.

Alan McViety, Appleby Community Enterprise Director commented “We are delighted with the response from both locals and visitors to the town. We had over 200 people looking around the displays during the weekend and received so many positive comments, which was extremely encouraging. It wouldn’t have come together without all the great team work by all the various community organisations, so a big thank you to everyone who helped to get the exhibition open.”

Chris Wilson, Chair of Appleby-in-Westmorland Society said “It’s a great start to a bright future and I hope a community venture that will help to promote and develop an understanding and appreciation of Appleby and its fascinating history.”

Appleby Times and the exhibition is part of a programme of activities that ACE are facilitiating, funded by Eden District Council to support Appleby’s status as a Heritage Action Zone town.
